The PC response on rapid transit in HRM

Just in time for you to vote tomorrow, we’ve got the last response to our questions about provincial support for rapid transit in HRM — this time, from the Progressive Conservatives. (Click here for the NDP responses, here for the Liberals responses, and here for the Green Party responses.)

Here’s the PC’s full responses to our questions. The TL;DR is… no real commitment to supporting any of Halifax Transit’s rapid transit plans. You can see the letter they sent us below.

1. If elected, will you commit your support to the Province contributing its third of the total capital costs needed to complete Halifax Transit’s Mill Cove fast ferry project?

The PC’s make no commitment to completing the Mill Cove fast ferry project. They say, “A PC Government is dedicated to working with all stakeholders and industries to make informed decisions on supporting public transit. Upon forming a government, we will honour previous agreements.”

2. If elected, will you commit your support to the Province contributing its third of the total capital costs of Halifax Transit’s Bus Rapid Transit project?

The PC’s also make no commitment to completing the bus rapid transit project. They say (again), “A PC Government is dedicated to working with all stakeholders and industries to make informed decisions on supporting public transit. Upon forming a government, we will honour previous agreements.”

3. Do you believe that public transit options in HRM are currently adequate? If not, if you are elected, how do you and your party intend to make transit in HRM better?

The PCs don’t seem to have much opinion about whether transit in HRM is good enough. They say, “A PC government is committed to listening to all stakeholders in the sector in order to learn where change needs to take place. We will be working closely with municipalities, and negotiating a new Memorandum of Understanding. We have committed to doubling the Municipal Finance Capacity Grant during the negotiations.”
